Staff Profiles

David Armstrong
Founder and CEO of Earth Sea Sky, David has an enviable background in business development and management within the adventure, fitness and training industry.
David has specialist qualifications, skills and experience in organising and leading customized elite trekking, sailing and diving adventures worldwide. David’s industry relevant qualifications include: MSDT Dive Instructor, Senior First Aid, Oxygen Administration, Advanced Resuscitation, Remote Wilderness Medic, Cert IV in Assessment and Workplace Training, Certificate IV in Personal Training and Certificate III in Fitness. In additional David has high altitude training and expertise in many areas of Fitness.

Erin Bruhn

As the Director of Marketing, Business Development of Earth Sea Sky, Erin is responsible for the creative marketing and promotion of the company. Erin is a partner in ESSA and helped develop the business profile of ESS through creative marketing initiatives across the adventure, fitness and training industry. She has 10 years experience in various commercial and Not for Profit business contexts. Her expertise lies in strategic marketing, events planning, management and coordination, membership management, revenue building and client relations.
ESSA is emerging as a benchmark company in elite training and adventure programs and continues to grow the business through targeted marketing and sales campaigns.

Paul Adler

Melbourne based Paul Adler has been rock and ice climbing for the past 18 years. His credentials include technical mountaineering in the NZ Alps and trekking and climbing in Nepal, Argentina, Tanzania and Kazakhstan. He has successfully climbed the Maltebrum and Agile Rouge in NZ in 1993, Parchamo Mountain in Nepal in 1995, Aconcagua in1998, Mount Kilimanjaro to the Heim Glacier climbing the Barafu in 2002, Khan Tengri via the north side route over Chapayev in 2004, the Matterhorn Mt Blanc (Tres Monts Route) in 2005. Following an unsuccessful attempt on Mount Everest in 2006, having to turn back only 100 metres from the summit, Paul returned to Nepal in 2007 and conquered the summit via the south-west Ridge.
Paul will lead clients on the Everest Base Camp and Beyond Base Camp Trekking adventures. His knowledge, climbing ability and years of experience will ensure ESS clients are lead on a memorable climbing adventure.

Wayne Rodgers

Wayne Rogers is a qualified and accredited Sports Physiotherapist and Personal Trainer with over 18 years experience in the health and fitness industry. He has been the physiotherapist for several national and international sports teams including the Australian Commonwealth Games Team and the Australian Netball Team. Based in Melbourne, Wayne is the Company Director of a successful physiotherapy and health coaching business. ESS clients wanting the best in one on one fitness consultations may also take advantage of Wayne's skills as a Personal Trainer.
Wayne has trekked through the Nepalese Himalayas on 8 separate occasions and his adventurous spirit has taken him to Europe, South Africa, India and South East Asia. He has a passion for adventure and a special interest in developing high quality functional training programs for clients embarking on physically challenging travel experiences. In conjunction with ESS Principal David Armstrong, Wayne has applied his knowledge, skills and experience to the development of the most comprehensive pre-adventure training programs that are unique to ESS.

Graeme Kennedy

Graeme is a personal trainer, health coach and massage practitioner with 12 years experience in the health and fitness industry. His adventure experience includes trekking in the Annupurna and Everest Base Camp regions of Nepal, National Parks of New Zealand and Hawaii's Napali Coast. ESS clients are able to take advantage of Graeme's knowledge, skills and experience to maximize their well being and enjoyment of any physical challenges they will encounter on their ESS adventure.
Graeme holds a degree in Physical Education and a Diploma in Sports Recreation. He is an active sportsman and has competed in swim events in New Zealand and natural body building Victorian and Australian titles. He is passionate about empowering people to realize their potential based on greater understanding of healthy human function.

Amer Kudi

Amer is a caring and highly skilled health and fitness professional who takes pleasure in seeing his clients achieve their goals. He specializes in movement therapy and functional exercise. Amer has a Diploma in Sports Kinesiology and is a Certified Circular Strength Training (CST) Coach as well as a Gary Gray functional transformation trainer.

James and Amer take an integrated and holistic approach to wellness. Utilizing a variety of non-invasive therapeutic techniques they can assist you with a range of issues including injury rehabilitation, postural misalignment, chronic and acute pain and illness, allergies and nutritional deficiencies, learning difficulties, hormonal imbalance and much more. Their aim to give you the tools necessary to help you live your life healthy, pain free and full of vitality.

James Alamanos
James is a practicing Sports Kinesiologist and Exercise Coach who combines eastern concepts with western science to help his clients reach their goals. He specializes in neural re-patterning and mind-body integration. James has a Diploma in Sports Kinesiology and is a Certified Circular Strength Training (CST) Coach and Stretch Therapy Teacher (Kit Laughlin & Associates).

David Sturmer

Sapper Dave Sturmer was a National Serviceman from 1968 to 1970 Royal Australian Engineers ( RAE ). Dave Sturmer finished his Corp training in Dec 1968 at the School of Military Engineering, Casula Sydney.
Dave was posted to 1Tp, 1st Field Squadron in April 1969 and served at the Battle of Binh Ba in June '69. On two seperate incidents Dave was injured by mines including an incident the day man landed on the moon. The song "I was only 19" is about that very incident and Dave reacted with absoulute bravery. ESS is lucky and proud to be associated with Dave who adds a new dimension to the Beyond Long Tan experience.

Paul Beck

As a Dive Master and specialty diver, Paul has assisted David Armstrong in many adventures, expeditions and courses. As a skilled underwater cinematographer, he has produced some amazing underwater footage. ESS is thrilled that the memories of an ESS dive adventure will be expertly captured on film by Paul at no extra cost to our clients.
Paul has logged 25 Antarctic dives and his dive master skills and diving experience make him an integral member of the ESS team. During Dive Antarctica 2005, Paul captured HDV amazing footage. Out of the water, Paul is a fulltime contract analyst programmer based in London


ESS Specialised Training Programs

Training Program Options:

  1. Fully Supervised
    The Fully Supervised Training Program provides Melbourne based clients the opportunity to train, one on one, with an ESS fitness specialist. 'Fully Supervised' clients are required to complete four separate training sessions for each of the 12 weeks of the program (36 sessions overall). The program incorporates gym based indoor training and accompanied outdoor urban and bush walks. The Earth Sea Sky Fully Supervised Training program is divided into 3 graduated phases: Getting started, Exploring Your Potential and The Final Push. Client progress will be monitored through all three stages.
  2. Remote with Personal Trainer
    The Remote with Personal Trainer Program provides clients with a personal trainer who will guide clients through the ESS training program. ESS instructs all Personal Trainers in the ESS fitness training program principles and methods before permitting them to work with our clients. ESS remains in regular contact via email newsletter and phone with the client and personal trainer to monitor progress through the program and its outcomes. "Remote with Personal Trainer" clients undertake the same 36 session training program utilizing gym based indoor training and outdoor urban and bush walks. The Earth Sea Sky Remote (with Personal Trainer) program is divided into the same 3 preparatory phases: Getting Started, Exploring Your Potential and The Final Push

  3. Fully Remote (with DVD)
    The Fully Remote Training Program caters for clients who do not reside in Melbourne. "Fully Remote" clients undertake the same 12 week / 36 sessions training program incorporating indoor training and outdoor urban and bush walks. The Fully Remote Training program consists of the same 3 preparatory phases including Getting Started, Exploring Your Potential and The Final Push.
    Fully Remote clients are provided with a comprehensive instructional DVD designed by ESS that demonstrates all the necessary fitness requirements for the chosen adventure. A comprehensive training manual is also provided and enables clients to monitor & record their progress. ESS fitness staff will be in regular contact with Fully Remote clients, during the 12 week program, to provide additional advice, support and encouragement and ensure the training is progressing on schedule.

ESS can take all the inconvenience and worry out of obtaining the appropriate equipment for all adventures. Earth Sea Sky's retail and adventure experience will ensure our clients receive the best professional advice relating to gear choice. ESS has developed secure relationships with reputable manufacturers and suppliers and has sourced the most appropriate, high quality and tested equipment suitable for all adventure activities. ESS will arrange purchase, delivery and testing of equipment prior to each adventure.
Clients are not obligated in any way to purchase equipment from ESS however ESS has negotiated exceptional value for money and can offer all requisite equipment at the most competitive price available.

  • ESS is happy to recommend appropriate equipment and retailers should clients choose to purchase elsewhere. We do however obligate clients to have all equipment tested by ESS prior to departure to ensure that equipment reaches our strict standards for safety, function, fit and comfort.
