Dr Karen Holzer - Sports Physician

Dr Karen Holzer is an extremely experienced, accredited and well known Sports Physician based in Melbourne.

She has worked extensively with athletes at all levels, from the occasional recreational athlete through to the elite international athlete.She receives great satisfaction helping each individual at whatever level they may be, achieve their own personal goals and aspirations.

Karen is unique in that she has a PhD and post Doctorate in Exercise-induced Asthma and breathing difficulties. She is recognised world wide as a leading researcher and clinician in this area. She played a major role in the preparation and management of the Australian Olympic team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, at which the air pollution and consequent airways complications were the major concern.

Karen has worked as a team doctor for a variety of sports at the Domestic, State, National and International levels including Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and Olympic Games, an accomplishment that very few Doctors have achieved.

Unlike most Sports Physicians, Karen has a strong basis in treating both medical and musculoskeletal issues.  She has extensive experience in treating:

  1. Exercise-induced Breathing Issues
  2. Iron Deficiency
  3. Lethargy
  4. Recurrent infections
  5. Female issues – menstrual, weight, pregnancy, bone density
  6. Weight issues
  7. Tendinopathies
  8. Acute and overuse injuries

 Karen has special interests in the care, both medical and musculoskeletal, of:

  1. Endurance Athletes – open water swimmers, road cyclists, distance runners, triathletes, ironmen & women and rowers
  2. Swimmers
  3. Track and Field Athletes
  4. Track Cyclists
  5. All Ball Sports – Basketball, Football, Rugby, Soccer, Netball, Tennis & Hockey.

Furthermore, as an extension of Karen’s extensive work in cardiorespiratory performance in athletes, Karen has a special interest in altitude training and its impact on performance and VO2 max testing. 

Dr Craig Taylor - Osteopath

Osteopath Dr Craig Taylor has consistently focused on progressive and effective treatment of musculo-skeletal complaints using a variety of techniques. A Victoria University graduate, Craig has most recently worked in the Geelong and Bellarine Region as an osteopath, for Deakin University as a lecturer and tutor in the anatomy field and locally as a mentor for younger osteopathic students

As ESS's primary osteopath, Craig not only focuses on resolution of presenting injury, he believes in ensuring his patients reach a level of conditioning that exceeds the pre-injury state, as this helps to prevent recurrence of the injury. He aims to develop strength in the once injured area and achieves this through his holistic approach to injury resolution. Craig addresses the key underlying and contributing factors that lead to injury in order to better treat his patients.

Craig is a diverse sportsperson with advanced experience in a variety of disciplines. Through his own sporting experiences and training, Craig is able to understand the complex needs of his patients whilst providing realistic and effective treatment goals.

Rosie McCaughey B.Physio (Hons)- Physiotherapist

Physiotherapist Rosie McCaughey is a dedicated and experienced physiotherapist with a keen interest in sports, general musculoskeletal injuries and rehabilitation.

Graduating from LaTrobe University in 2007, she completed her honours research in shoulder injuries. Rosie has worked full time in private practice treating a variety of injuries including those related specifically to running, swimming, cycling, triathlon and dance, as well as general musculoskeletal disorders.

With extensive experience as a pilates clinician and a comprehensive strength and conditioning background, Rosie integrates both specialties in her treatments and approach to rehabilitation.

Rosie has a passion for running and triathlon, competing at local, national and international age group level triathlon over the past couple of years. She has a special interest in both running technique and bike set up and how these relate to injury and performance.

She is a member of Sports Physiotherapy Australia, and is involved in organising and convening professional development for physiotherapists throughout Victoria. She is committed to providing you with a high quality of care with a holistic approach.
